Music...illegal?

In 1984, a film was released called "Footloose" starring Kevin Bacon, who plays a teenager living in a small suburb of Chicago in which the local reverend, played by John Lithgow, has banned music, deeming it sinful. It was a smash hit. About a month ago, a radical group of Somalian fundamentalist's named Hizbul Islam (shown above) declared that all music is "un-Islamic". However, this is not the plot line of a movie...it is actually happening. "Serious consequences" have been promised to anyone who disobeys. As a result, all radio stations have been forced to cut any and all music from their broadcasts. This includes opening jingles of any sort, for, say, a news reporting station, which have now been replaced with "sounds such as gunfire, the noise of vehicles, and the sound of birds". Music is arguably one of the sole elements left on our planet which is fundamentally universal, as in nondenominational, nonpartisan, nondiscriminatory, unprejudiced, etc. If we can't even have that, then what do we have? Skinny Fiddy

Some disturbing images of an extremely gaunt looking 50 Cent have been surfacing lately, like the one above. 50 has told the press his 54 pound weight loss (!) is for a role in the movie "Things Fall Apart" in which he plays a football played who becomes diagnosed with cancer. It's funny, 50 doesn't seem to have the same appeal at 160 pounds...hmmm...

World's Biggest Dodgeball Game NYC

On May 12th, Samsung invited over 1,500 people to come to the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan and participate in the world's largest dodgeball game to promote their new phone "The Reality". Watch this video, it's crazy...I so regret not going!!!

p.s. There were 700 dodgeballs...certified insanity.

Merry Early Christmas Harold & Kumar

In case you were wondering, it's National Hamburger month. In honor of such an occasion, White Castle has decided to create and manufacture hamburger-scented candles made to look like the classic White Castle box. "The candle has a top note of diced sweet onions and crisp pickle, the middle notes are beef patty, cheese and ketchup, and bottom note is a warm burger bun. It all comes together to create this amazing aroma of a White Castle Slider." Is this supposed to make people want to buy these? Because it personally made me gag. Anyways, if you're interested, they go for ten bucks a pop. If you haven't yet come across this video in your internet travels, you must watch it immediately. Ppssibly the most bizarre thing I have ever seen (not an exaggeration). Upon completion my mind was pretty much blown into a million pieces.

Kenny Scharf's Cosmic Cavern

Kenny Scharf, pop artist and friend to the late Keith Haring and the late Klaus Nomi, has transformed his Bushwick basement into a haven "alive with the spirit of the early ’80s, lined in the Day-Glo-painted trash-bedecked panels he once deployed in nightclubs and galleries" says the New York Times. I was lucky enough to attend an event he hosted there this past Saturday, a "Living Installation" with Draw-A-Thon connoisseur, local artist Michael Alan. Mr. Scharf was decked out in a skin-tight white t-shirt which read in neon letters, "get me drunk and enjoy the show", skin tight neon pink leggings, neon orange converse high-tops, and a neon pink bob-style wig, naturally. While Michael Alan proceeded to paint, spray, draw, the works on the nude models in the center of the room, the audience themselves watched, drew, painted, wrote, thought, etc. Entering the cosmic cavern and basking in its entirety is an experience alone. It is truly breathtaking and unlike anything you've ever seen before, I guarantee it.

Culture Club Reunion?

Rumors of a Culture Club reunion are brewing. Boy George reportedly told BBC he's considering bringing the gang back together to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2011."We’ll see. It’s all about my mood at the time," George said. "I think we could do a one-off gig or maybe a small tour." Wu Massacre

Suchhhhhhhh a dope album cover. Meth, Ghost, and Rae produced by RZA and Mathematics featuring Inspectah Deck and Cappadonna among others. Finally set to release March 30th (we'll see if that sticks). In preparation for release, the trio decided to create some trailers directed by Rik Cordero inspired by the David Fincher film "Se7en" starring themselves as "criminals studying criminology who made some ill murder shit happen" as so eloquently put by Raekwon. They're actually pretty stupid but extremely entertaining. It's also funny because everytime a trailer ends it displays the album release date, which gets pushed futher back each time. Watch parts I, II, and III here:

Here is a behind-the-scenes clip of the making of the music video for one of the songs on the album "Our Dreams", which is also a continuation of this elbaorate scenario they've come up with in the trailers:

PUTS Review

Show couldn't have been doper, just found this review, I forgot to post after I went. Those are my eyes Double K is gazing into.

"I'm always one to judge, but it's just too easy when Phish hats and older white gentlemen with glitter on their faces pepper the crowd. Man how I long for the days of seeing People Under the Stairs at SOB's, smoking blunts with Double K during the headliner because they were a supporting act. But while selling out a large NYC venue may bring out some cheesier faces in the crowd, the PUTS remain true. Playing nearly a decade of hits--hearing "Acid Raindrops" and "San Francisco Nights" made me reaching for the wax when I got home--Thes One and Double K still know how to turn a room out. And like on every record they've done, they payed homage to New York's hip-hop roots. Greg Nice even made a guest appearance to show his appreciation for the duo's historical knowledge. I will give the crowd some credit though; at least they kept the bouncers busy by keeping the room filled with the sweet smell of cheeba."

Spin's Inconvenient Truth's

I happened to pick up the December issue of Spin the other day and encountered this article chronicling "16 Rock Myths Debunked". It was an interesting read including myths such as:
1. Radiohead Can Do No Wrong
2. Nirvana Killed Hair Metal
3. Lady Gaga Is All Style, No Substance
4. Biggie & Tupac Are Hip-Hop's Pillars
Not a fruitless read, definitely worth a few minutes.

Earth Girls Are Easy

If you've never seen this movie, you must do so immediately. It's an 80's camp-classic, and it's fucking awesome. Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum play the leads, and they were married when the movie was filmed. Probably one of the most gorgeous celebrity couples of all time, they kick Brangelina's sorry little asses. Jeff Goldblum is, was, and always will be a babe, and he's a total babe in this movie. In the film, three aliens crash their U.F.O. and wind up in the pool of a girl who lives in the valley. Because the pool water damaged the craft, they need to kill time until they can fix it. The girl (Geena Davis) and her friend (Julie Brown), who conveniently owns a salon, decide to give them "human" makeovers to fit in, and ruckus of epic proportion ensues. Also in it are Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans, who play the two other aliens. What more could you possibly ask for?

Tavi Inc.

If you know anything about the blogosphere, or fashion, for that matter, you've probably heard of Tavi, the 13-year-old fashion blogging sensation. Her blog, http://tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com/, has attracted attention from readers all over the world, and from some of the biggest names in fashion. She was personally invited to New York Fasion week, amongst tons of other incredible opportunities a 13 year old from the suburbs of Chicago could have possibly been given, including countless photoshoots for big publications by big photographers, to most recently becoming the muse for the Rodarte line. Anyways, for a girl of her age and upbringing, she has a suprising knowledge of fashion as well as a very sophisticated taste and an appreciation for fashion concepts most half the world probably couldn't understand. Amoung her favorites are Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garçons. When the designer collaborated with H&M to create an affordable line for them, Tavi was so excited that she couldn't help but find a more appropriate outlet of expression other than through song of course. Watch here (sorry, Vimeo won't let me embed): http://www.vimeo.com/2247337
Anyways, recently, a writer named Tanya Gold wrote a piece for The Guardian titled "Why I Hate Fashion". Read it here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/jan/22/i-hate-fashion-tanya-gold. Quite frankly, it's insulting, and, in my personal opinion, completely nonsensical. Tavi wrote a response to this article, which you can read here: http://tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com/2010/01/fashion-basically-also-team-conan.html. It's awesome and perfectly well written in the satirical manner that Tavi is so well known for. Read it.

Fat Jew for Vice DO's & DON'Ts

"Something you may have noticed earlier, or may be noticing right now, as we tell you this, is that this month’s DOs & DON’Ts are not written by us. Well, technically they are by us, but us now includes a certain bonhomme of particular renown. His name is the Fat Jew and he will now introduce himself to you, thusly:

This month’s DOs & DON’Ts are written by me, the Fat Jew. I’m New York City’s fanciest, sleaziest, hunkiest, ruggedest, bummiest, and sauciest. I’m the ugly Rob Lowe. I’m one-quarter of the rap group Team Facelift—we’re a mix between Barbra Streisand and Wu-Tang Clan. I’m into pedicures, Tony Danza, honey mustard, ribbed turtlenecks, loofahs, not giving a fuck, frenzied behavior, tasteful floral arrangements, Jewish girls from Long Island, making poor decisions, shrimp in baskets, depression, cheap champagne, penny loafers, and watching drunk white girls at bars singing “Juicy.” I wrote these in the nude while surrounded by scented candles (sugar-cookie scent). You’re welcome.

The Incident

PUTS in NYC

As you can probably tell from my blog, People Under the Stairs are my most favorite group ever. However, they'e based in L.A. and rarely come to the East Coast. Actually, they're not in the U.S. very often as they have a massive fan following in other countries so they end up playing in places like Brazil and Germany, etc. Buttttttttttt they're currently touring for Carried Away and are coming to NYC !!! I'm going, January 23rd @ Bowery Ballroom. 8:00 p.m. You should too, tickets are only $15.00.

Haus of Gaga

I'm really not sure how I feel about Lady Gaga and have been trying to figure it out for a while. Actually, I kind of suspect that she might actually be a man, as well as just plain insane as in crazy in the head, but that's a whole other story. For one thing, I commend her for doing, saying, and wearing whatever the fuck she wants. I think she's an incredible visionary and I don't think anyone can honestly deny that she's one of the most interesting acts to hit the music scene in a while. Whether you like her or not, she makes you think. She attracts attention, good or bad, and everyone talks about her. However, in terms of her music, it's not anything I'd ever listen to. Sure there are some catchy tunes but none of it appeals to me. It's not anything I'd ever voluntarily subject myself to listening. The good thing is that she can actually sing. I came across this video recently and can't stop listening to it. It's amazing/incredible.

Winter Tube

This show about a Morman polygamist family living in Utah is absolutely genuis, one of my favorites, and returning for its 4th season tonight. Sunday, January 10th @ 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
American Idol is my weakness, as I'm sure is the case for half of America, and it's returning for its 9th season. Replacing Paula Abdul as a permanent judge is Ellen Degeneres, with additional guest judges such as Victoria Beckham, Katy Perry, Mary J. Blige, and more. Tuesday, January 12th @ 8:00 p.m. on Fox.

After a terrible last season in L.A., Project Runway returns to NYC for what I'm hoping will be a better turnout than last's. Thursday, January 14th @ 10:00 p.m. on Lifetime.
